Models and actors rely on expert make-up artists to change their appearance, which enables them to secure a wide variety of rolls. No one is hired because they say they can look a certain way. Photographs provide the proof, not only for models and actors, but for make-up artists as well.

When you show clients that you can do completely different looks on the same model, it tells them you are a broad range artist. Show them you can change the appearance of bone structure, skin tone and eye shape, altering a persons entire demeanor, and your skills will not go unnoticed.

During a recent master class at Award Studio we had an actress come to us for make-up and headshots. Two different make-up artists worked on her, each doing a completely different look. I photographed their work and here are the results.

The photo on the left is geared towards film and television work. It shows what the actress actually looks like, and the make-up is appropriately soft and natural looking. The second look is wonderful for fashion and beauty. The dark, smoky eyes and pale lips are at the cutting edge of fashion this season. The artist who created this look showed inspiration.

Professional make-up artists never stop working on their portfolios: discarding, adding and updating. As you work through this never ending but gratifying process, remember to show your versatility. Your book should present surprises, wit and an occasional flight into fantasy. These things are needed to capture and hold the interest of the viewer. Keep your photos fresh and current. Never stop moving forward or you will be left behind.
